Chief Rex Olawoye, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kwara State, has died.

The notable politician breathed his last in the early hours of Thursday, after a brief illness.

Olawoye, popularly called ‘Baba Rex’, was one of the most respected opposition voices against the Saraki dynasty in Kwara.

He was a prominent figure in the O’toge movement, the political revolution that wiped out the old order in Kwara.

Meanwhile, Kwara State governor, AbdulRahman Abdulrasaq has mourned the passing of the APC stalwart.

In a statement by his spokesperson, Abdurafiu Ajakaye, the governor described Baba Rex as a gentleman who loved the younger generation, adding he played “a pivotal role in the political development of the state over the past few decades.”

The statement reads, “Baba Rex Olawoye was a delight to be with, a soft-spoken gentleman and orator, a lover of younger generation, a dogged fighter, and certainly a statesman who played a pivotal role in the political development of the state over the past few decades.

“We will miss his clarity of thought, his brilliance, and his constructive advice on governance. His words of wisdom even on his sickbed when I last spoke with him were quite reassuring as we were earnestly expectant of his recovery.

“On behalf of my family, the government and people of the state, I salute the commitments of Chief Rex Olawoye to the collective struggle of our people and the growth of our state.

“My profound commiserations go to his family, his generation of wise Kwara Elders and the APC family in Kwara State. May God comfort the family he left behind and grant him repose.”
