Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande has clarified that no final decision has been taken to replace the NYSC khaki uniform, after media reports suggested Adire fabric had been approved.

In a statement posted on his official X handle on Thursday, the minister clears the air on the several reports of changing NYSC approved uniform to Adire, a locally made Fabric popularly common in Kwara and Ogun states.

“My attention has been drawn to some media reports following my brief appearance earlier this morning on Channels TV,” Olawande said in a statement Thursday.

“For the avoidance of doubt, yes, I mentioned Adire during the discussion. I also mentioned Ankara.”

The minister said both fabrics were cited only as “examples of some of the proposals that have been put forward” during consultations on NYSC reforms.

“It was not an announcement that any particular fabric has been adopted or approved to replace the current NYSC uniform.”

Olawande said the ministry is reviewing “different options that tick all the right boxes in terms of professional outlook, a unique national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the projection of national pride.”

No final decision has been made on fabric or design, he stressed, adding that “any eventual decision will be guided by extensive stakeholder engagement and what best serves the interests of the Scheme and the nation.”

The minister urged Nigerians not to let uniform debates “overshadow the far-reaching reforms” planned for NYSC.

The overhaul, approved by the Federal Executive Council, aims to make the scheme “more relevant to today’s realities by improving employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and creating a smoother transition from education to productive careers.”

Olawande thanked the public for “constructive feedback” and assured that “every proposal will continue to be carefully considered in the best interest of the nation.”
