What Buhari told APC governors ahead of presidential primaries

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Tuesday, met with the 22 governors under the All Progressives Congress (APC) at Aso Rock, amid preparations for the party’s special convention where its presidential candidate for the 2023 elections will be picked.

Addressing the governors, Buhari noted that the APC’s choice of a presidential flagbearer “must be someone who would give the Nigerian masses a sense of victory and confidence even before the elections”.

According to the President, he has a duty to “provide stronger leadership to the party under this transition process and to ensure that it happens in an orderly manner”, adding that the special convention is important to the party.

“Such leadership is required so that the party remains strong and united. It is also needed to improve our electoral fortunes by ensuring that it retains power at the center, holds the great majority in various legislative chambers and also gains an additional number of states,” Buhari said.

“In a few days, the party will be holding its convention during which primaries would take place to pick the Presidential Flag Bearer for the 2023 general election.

“This is a very significant process and its outcome should prove to the world the positive quality of the APC regarding democratic principles, culture as well as leadership.”

BlackBox Nigeria had reported that 23 presidential hopefuls are in the race to clinch the APC.

Meanwhile, the Screening Committee of the party led by a former National Chairman, John Oyegun, is expected to hold the screening for the second batch of presidential aspirants on Tuesday.

On Monday, the Committee successfully screened 12 aspirants including a former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; immediate past Ministers, Rotimi Amaechi and Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba; governors of Ebonyi and Jigawa States, David Umahi and Badaru Abubakar; former Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun, among others.
