Steven Gerrard warned against Villa job

The vacant Aston Villa job has been labelled by Rangers legend, Ally McCoist as ‘risk’ for Steven Gerrard. His former teammates also issued stern warning to the current Rangers’ Manager.

Following the sack of Dean Smith, Aston Villa had being on the lookout for a new coach with Steven Gerrard pitched as one of the potential replacements. Struggling Villa currently sit 16th on the Premier League table with 10 points gathered from the eleven outings this season.

Steven Gerrard, who eyes becoming Liverpool coach in the nearest future, had enjoyed three successful at Scottish Premier League giant, Rangers. His proficiency made him the likely candidates to replace Dean Smith at Aston Villa. But this didn’t augur well for McCoist who believed that such move will hinder his chances of becoming the Reds’ gaffer someday.

While speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, McCoist questioned the possibility of Gerrard attaining success at Aston Villa.

“What if he goes to Aston Villa and it doesn’t work out?,” he asked.

The Rangers legend explained, “He’s got a better chance of success at Rangers than he has at Aston Villa, if he wants the Liverpool job. If he goes to Aston Villa and it doesn’t work out, he won’t get the Liverpool job.

“If he goes to Aston Villa and it doesn’t work out, he won’t get the Liverpool job.” The Ranger legend explained.

Similarly, Steven Gerrard’s former teammates frowned against the former Liverpool captain taking up Aston Villa’s managerial job. When asked about the move, Danny Murphy and Jamie Carragher considered the job as too risky for Gerrard.

“I just think there are risks. I thought Dean Smith might have earned himself more time. I can understand it, but if I was Steven, I wouldn’t do it. I’d stay where I am,” they said.

However, this advice against the Aston Villa job opposed that of former Crystal Palace Simon Jordan. He believed that Gerrard needs a bridging move between Ibrox (Rangers) and Anfield (Liverpool).
