Defending European champions Real Madrid are set to earn extra money after fellow LaLiga clubs Barcelona, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid suffered elimination from the Champions League.
The Los Blancos are the only Spanish club left in Europe’s elite club competition after the heavyweight trio were sent tumbling out at the group stage.
Barcelona knew of their status before playing their penultimate group game against Bayern Munich, which ended in a humiliating 3-0 loss at Camp Nou.
Atletico were crashed out in a more dramatic fashion after Yannick Carrasco missed a last-gasp penalty in a 2-2 draw with German side Bayer Leverkusen.
Diego Simeone’s side could still crash out of Europe entorely if they suffer a defeat at FC Porto on Matchday 6. Sevilla were relegated to the Europa league with Manchester City and Dortmund progressing to the knock out stage in their group.
According to Spanish publication Marca, the result is that Real Madrid will pocket at least an extra €8.6 million. Should Carlo Ancelotti and his men advance to the final, the sum can go up to €11.7m.
