Nigeria breaks silence on Ukraine invasion, tells Russia to withdraw troops

The Nigerian Government has lent its voice over the ongoing Russian-Ukraine conflict, suing for peace among both nations.

The official position of the Federal Government was a call for peace to resolve the conflict, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama.

Onyeama spoke after a closed-door meeting with envoys of the G7 countries in Nigeria, on Friday, to discuss the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces — a move that has since been criticised by the international community.

The minister said the Nigerian Government called for peace and the use of diplomacy in resolving all differences.

While condemning the approach of aggression by Russia, Onyeama noted that Nigeria is calling on Russia to pull back its troops.

“Peace and diplomacy to be prioritised by both sides.

“We support every effort being made to stop the aggression and Russian troops to return to Russia,” he said.

The minister’s comment comes hours after he declared that the Nigerian Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine had been contacted to arrange special flights for Nigerians who are willing to return home from other areas including Donestk and Luhensk.
