US President Donald Trump has suggested renaming the strategically important Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait” amid the ongoing conflict between the United States and Iran.
Trump made the proposal on Wednesday in a post on his Truth Social platform, asking whether the waterway should be renamed now that he claims the United States has control over it.
“Now that we have it under U.S.A. control, should we change the name Hormuz Strait to TRUMP STRAIT???” Trump wrote.
The suggestion came amid escalating tensions over the Strait, a vital global shipping route through which a significant share of the world’s oil supply passes.
Trump has repeatedly claimed that the United States controls the strategic waterway, while Iran has maintained that it retains control and has taken measures to restrict shipping through the passage during the conflict.
The White House later appeared to endorse the president’s suggestion, sharing a map that referred to the waterway as “Trump Strait” and adding that the name had “a nice ring to it.”
However, the waterway has not been officially renamed. The internationally recognised name remains the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump’s latest proposal is also consistent with his administration’s broader push to rename prominent geographical features, including the Gulf of Mexico, which he has referred to as the “Gulf of America.”
The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea.
