On the floor of the House of Representatives, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa is the Majority Leader and lawmaker representing Tudun Wada/Doguwa Federal Constituency in Kano State. At home, he is the husband of four wives and father to 28 children, and still counting.

The self-styled ‘powerful parliamentarian’ caused a mild drama during the plenary on Tuesday, after it was announced that he has welcomed his 28th child.

While responding to the congratulatory wishes of the Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, Ado-Doguwa jokingly requested that the House amend the Electoral Act to permit families with 30 kids have a polling unit in their home, saying he plans to have more children before the end of the 9th Assembly.

In 2019, the controversial lawmaker who is serving his fifth term had stormed the floor of the House with his four wives during his inauguration.

“These four wives you are seeing Mr Speaker have produced 27 children for me and I’m still counting,” he had boasted at the time.

Ado-Doguwa’s journey into the House of Representatives started in 1992 when he was elected under the defunct Social Democratic Party (SDP).

With his vast political portfolio, he would go on to serve in a number of positions in government. In 2000, he became Special Adviser to Kano State Governor on Environment. He was also the Special Adviser on Government Affairs and Political Affairs to Senate Presidents, Chief Adolphus Wabara and Senator Ken Nnamani, respectively.

The Bayero University graduate, while serving in the House, became the Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) in 2007. He also served as the Chairman of the African Network of Parliamentarians on MDGs.

In 2015, Ado-Doguwa was elected Chief Whip in the Eighth Assembly led by Yakubu Dogara. A member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), he is currently the Majority Leader of the Ninth Assembly.
