Killer of Akwa Ibom jobseeker sentenced to death

Uduak Frank Akpan has been sentenced to death by hanging for the murder of a female jobseeker, Iniobong Umoren.

The suspect was arraigned before a High Court in Akwa Ibom State, on Thursday.

Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy from the University of Uyo, was lured and killed by Akpan. The deceased left her house on April 29, 2021, for a phoney job interview orchestrated by the suspect before she was allegedly killed by him.

Akpan was later arrested by the Akwa Ibom State Police Command after Umoren’s body was uncovered in a shallow grave at the backyard of his father’s compound.

In May 2021 when paraded by the police, the suspect confessed that he killed Umoren because she refused to allow him have sex with her.

In July 2021, the convict pleaded guilty to the charge of murder when he was first arraigned. He, however, denied raping the victim.

On Thursday, Akpan was sentenced to death by hanging and life imprisonment in the two charge of murder and rape preferred against him.

The presiding judge, Bassey Nkanang, however, acquitted the convict’s father, Frank Akpan and his sister, Anwan-Bassey Akpan who were co-accused in the trial.
