Kenya’s Deputy President, William Ruto has been elected as the country’s next leader.
The electoral body, on Monday, declared Ruto as the winner of the hotly contested presidential election.
The Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati announced that Ruto won almost 7.18 million votes (50.49 percent) against 6.94 million (48.85 percent) polled by his rival, Raila Odinga.
The results of the polls were, however, rejected by some of the commissioners.
Shortly before the announcement, four out of seven IEBC commissioners said they could not recognise the results, raising rigging fears.
The 55-year-old Ruto becomes Kenya’s fifth president-elect and set to succeed his principal, President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In his acceptance speech, he vowed to work with “all leaders” in Kenya.
“There is no room for vengeance,” Ruto said, adding: “I am acutely aware that our country is at a stage where we need all hands on deck.”
