Kachikwu’s brother defeats Moghalu to clinch ADC presidential ticket

A former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Kingsley Moghalu has failed to secure the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to pursue his 2023 presidential bid.

Moghalu, who recently joined the ADC, was defeated by Dumebi Kachikwu, the younger brother of former Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, at the party’s presidential primary held on Wednesday night in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Kachikwu polled 977 votes, while Moghalu got 589. Another aspirant in the race, Chukwuka Monye placed third with 399 votes.

Report has it that other contenders for the ADC ticket kicked against the emergence of the media entrepreneur as the party’s presidential flagbearer, accusing him of “dollarising” the process by bribing the delegates.

This development might be the end of the road for Moghalu who had vowed to retire older presidential hopefuls like Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The lawyer and political economist was the presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the 2019 presidential election. After losing at the polls, he dumped the party in October 2019.
