IGP sues Lagos cemetery owner, Onamade over false murder claims against ex-Ijede council boss

The Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba has instituted a two-count charge case against one Oluwatosin Onamade, alleging that he falsely accused Fatiu Salisu, the former Chairman of Ijede Ijede Local Council Development Area in Lagos State, of being involved in the murder of late Tony Godfrey.

Onamade, who is the Chief Executive Officer, Western Funeral Home Limited, Abule-Eko, off Ijede Road, Ikorodu, where the deceased worked alleged that the former council boss in the build up to the 2021 Local Government elections in Lagos State, sponsored thugs to attack his office where the deceased sustained injuries and died thereof.

The suit with reference number FHC/1/320C/2021, came up before Hon. Justice A.O. Faji (Court 2) at Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on Monday, January 17, around 9am.

In the charge obtained by BlackBox Nigeria, the Inspector General of Police accused Onamade of intentionally circulating grossly offensive propaganda to cause insult to Fatiu Salisu, who at the time was the Chairman of Ijede LCDA.

“THAT you, Oluwatosin Onamade M, sometimes in May 2021 in Lagos within the jurisdiction of the honourable Court did commit an illegal act to wit; intentionally circulating a grossly offensive propagation through your Facebook/ Instagram handle which you knew to be false for the purpose of causing insult to one Hon. Fatiu Salisu, ijede LCDA chairman by accusing him of the murder of late Tony Godfrey, you thereby committed an offence punishable under section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015,” the charge reads in part.

“That you, Oluwatosin Onamade M, sometimes in May 2021 in Lagos within jurisdiction of honourable Court knowingly cost the transmission of communication through your WhatsApp to harass one Hon. Fatiu Salisu, ijede LCDA chairman by falsely alleging that he sponsored the attack at Western funeral home limited office and murder of late Tony Godfrey, you thereby committed an offence punishable under section 24(2)(a) of the Cybercrimes Act, 2015.”

Though the case was adjourned till February 16, 2022, Barrister Victor I. Okoye, who stood in for the IG of Police told our correspondent that the complainant needs to produce the defendant in court at the next adjourned date.

In his reaction to the matter when our correspondent reached out to him via text, Oluwatosin Onamade said he is not aware of any suit against him at the Ikoyi Federal High Court, and that he would quickly make his findings of it.

“I’m not aware of any case at Ikoyi Federal High Court,” he said.

When the suit number and details of adjournment were made known to him, he responded saying, “Very strange. I will send it to my lawyer to make adequate findings about it.”
