Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inspected the vandalised portions of the Festac-Alakija Bridge following the arrest of 27 suspected hoodlums accused of removing critical materials from the newly constructed infrastructure.
Sanwo-Olu visited the bridge on Saturday for an on-the-spot assessment of the damage after authorities raised concerns over the activities of suspected vandals who allegedly targeted structural components of the bridge.
Following the inspection, the governor assured Lagos residents that the bridge remains safe and structurally sound despite the vandalism.
The governor also warned that the state government would not allow the destruction of public infrastructure and vowed that those responsible would face the full weight of the law.
Sanwo-Olu further warned individuals involved in buying vandalised government property, stressing that efforts to tackle the problem would extend beyond those physically removing materials from public infrastructure.
The inspection followed the arrest of 27 suspected hoodlums in connection with the vandalism.
The Lagos State Government had earlier said investigations showed that the suspects deliberately targeted critical components of the bridge.
The Festac-Alakija Bridge, which connects communities around Festac Town and Alakija in Lagos, is an important transport link in the Amuwo-Odofin area.
The governor’s visit is expected to reinforce the government’s response to the growing threat of vandalism of public infrastructure, while investigations continue into the incident and those allegedly involved.
