Nigerian singer and instrumentalist, Seun Anikulapo Kuti has shared the interesting story of how he got to meet the British music photographer who worked with his father, late Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
In a post shared on his social media pages on Monday, the son of the Afrobeat pioneer revealed that he recently worked with David Corio, a man who photographed his father 39 years ago — the year he (Seun) was born.
Corio, who took portraits of Seun in London for Mosaiko Magazine, hailed the singer for preserving his father’s legacy and carving a niche for himself in the Afrobeat genre.
“Spent a great day photographing Seun Kuti a few weeks ago in Hackney, London. In between photos we talked music, politics and football and discovering we both supported Arsenal certainly helped,” he was quoted as saying.
“We also discussed the work of his father Fela Anikulapo Kuti who I had the pleasure of meeting and photographing 39 years ago – the same year Seun was born. He is keeping Fela’s legacy shining brightly and bringing his own style, personality and energy to the music.”
Seun, also known as the Big Bird, shared some of the photos, adding that the rest will be included in the forthcoming edition of the magazine.
