Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) has launched the second edition of its social impact initiative, #BeatTheDistance, with plans to distribute 3,000 bicycles to schoolchildren across six states in Nigeria.

The initiative, aimed at reducing transportation barriers faced by pupils in underserved communities, will benefit students in Ebonyi, Jigawa, Benue, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, and Ekiti states.

GTCO said the programme builds on the success of its maiden edition in 2019 and reflects its continued commitment to improving access to education through practical interventions that address challenges affecting school attendance and learning.

The company noted that many children in rural and underserved communities travel long distances daily to access education, a situation that often leads to fatigue, reduced attendance, and challenges in academic performance.

Through the bicycle donation scheme, GTCO said it hopes to ease students’ daily commute, improve their learning experience, and create better opportunities for young people to pursue their education.

Speaking on the initiative, GTCO Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Segun Agbaje, said education remains a key driver of social transformation and economic opportunity.

“Education remains one of the most powerful tools for transforming lives and creating opportunities. Through the #BeatTheDistance Initiative, we are supporting students whose determination to learn is often tested by the distance they travel each day to access education,” Agbaje said.

He added that the bicycles would help reduce fatigue, improve school attendance, and support better learning outcomes for children.

“At GTCO, we believe that meaningful impact comes from addressing real challenges within communities. #BeatTheDistance is one of the ways we are investing in the future by supporting young people and helping to create conditions that enable them to succeed,” he said.

The initiative is part of GTCO’s wider social impact and sustainability efforts, focusing on education, youth empowerment, and community development.

The financial institution said it remains committed to programmes that promote inclusion, expand access to opportunities, and contribute to sustainable development across communities.
