Veteran Nollywood actor and filmmaker, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after a brief but widely publicised battle with stage-four cancer.
His death on Sunday, August 23, 2026, came less than a week after his family publicly appealed for urgent medical assistance for the actor. His daughter, Kira Taiwo, reportedly confirmed his death during an Instagram Live session.
As Nigerians mourn the veteran actor, here are things to know about Ogogo and the events surrounding his final days.
Ogogo was born Taiwo Hassan on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State. He became widely known by his stage name, Ogogo, and was one of the prominent actors in Yoruba-language Nollywood.
Hassan began his acting career in 1981 while still working outside the entertainment industry. He initially combined acting with his job before eventually making filmmaking his full-time career.
He reportedly worked as an automobile mechanic and later spent about 13 years working with the water corporation before leaving the job in 1994 to concentrate fully on acting.
Ogogo was not only known for acting. He also worked as a producer, director and screenwriter, establishing himself as a major figure in the Yoruba film industry.
Over several decades, he appeared in numerous Yoruba and English-language productions and became particularly recognised for playing strong, authoritative and action-oriented characters.
Among the films associated with Ogogo are Omo Ghetto, Omin, Elewon, Tenant of the House, Amerah, Bank Alert and Aníkúlápó.
He played Alaafin Ademuyiwa in Aníkúlápó and reprised the role in Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Spectre. He was also nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards for his performance in Aníkúlápó.
Ogogo’s health became a major public concern in August 2026 after his daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, appealed publicly for help with his treatment.
The daughters disclosed that the actor was battling stage-four cancer and needed urgent medical intervention. They made the appeals in emotional videos shared online.
Reports said the family was seeking specialised treatment after the illness had reached an advanced stage. The specific type of cancer was not publicly disclosed by the family.
Before his actual death, reports circulated online claiming that Ogogo had died.
On August 18, his daughter Lima dismissed the report as false and urged members of the public to disregard the unverified claim. The clarification came shortly after the family had revealed the seriousness of his condition.
Five days later, however, the family announced his actual death.
Ogogo celebrated his 66th birthday on October 31, 2025. He would have turned 67 in October 2026.
His death therefore came about two months before his 67th birthday.
For more than four decades, Ogogo remained a recognisable face in Nigerian cinema. His career stretched from the early days of the Yoruba film industry into the modern Nollywood era.
His ability to work across acting, directing, producing and screenwriting helped make him one of the veteran figures whose careers bridged different generations of Nigerian filmmaking.
Ogogo’s death has triggered mourning among fans and colleagues across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
His final illness also drew significant public attention after his daughters made emotional appeals for assistance.
The actor leaves behind a career spanning more than four decades and a body of work that made his name familiar to generations of Yoruba film lovers.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family.
