The death of veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, at 66 has sparked tributes from fans and colleagues across Nigeria, with many remembering the memorable characters and films that defined his more than four-decade career.
Ogogo, who died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after a battle with stage-four cancer, was one of the most recognisable figures in the Yoruba film industry.
From the early home-video era to contemporary Nollywood productions, he featured in numerous films and became known for his commanding voice, distinctive acting style and ability to portray authoritative characters.

Ogogo’s career showed through the evolution of Nigeria’s film industry.
He rose to prominence during the era of Yoruba home videos, when films were distributed mainly through physical copies, before successfully transitioning into modern cinema and streaming productions.
His performance in Owo Blow remains one of the works frequently associated with his rise to prominence.
He also featured in several Yoruba classics, including Delicate Cane, Tears of Joy, Ìdájọ́ Ọlọ́run, Legal Wife, Eleran Igbe, Ore Ijiji, Iya Ibeji and Ojo Ogbo.
He later appeared in popular productions such as Omo Ghetto, Tenant of the House and Aníkúlápó.
