A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna has granted bail to former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in an ongoing corruption trial, but ordered that he remain in custody pending the fulfilment of strict conditions.

The trial judge, Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, on Tuesday admitted El-Rufai to bail in the sum of N200 million with two sureties in like sum, following arguments from both the prosecution and defence.

The court ruled that the former governor must remain in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) until all bail conditions are met.

As part of the conditions, the judge directed that one surety must be a serving civil servant not below Grade Level 15, while the other must be a recognised traditional ruler. Both are also required to deposit their international passports with the court.

The court further barred El-Rufai from making public comments related to the case and ordered him to attend all court proceedings. Additional requirements include submission of landed property documents and other financial guarantees.

Despite the bail ruling, the former governor is yet to regain freedom, as he must satisfy all conditions before being released from custody.

El-Rufai is currently facing multiple charges filed by the ICPC, bordering on alleged abuse of office, fraud, and conferring undue advantage during his tenure as governor.

The case is part of a broader legal battle involving proceedings in both the Federal High Court and the Kaduna State High Court, where related charges are also being heard.

His son, Mohammed Bello El-Rufai, confirmed the bail development, expressing optimism that the family would meet the conditions soon.

The matter has been adjourned for further proceedings as legal watchers continue to monitor the high-profile trial.
