Crisis in Oyo Assembly as impeachment rumours trail Gov. Makinde

A political storm is brewing in the Oyo State House of Assembly following reports of an alleged plot by some lawmakers to impeach Governor Seyi Makinde, a claim that has triggered denials and exposed cracks within the legislature.

The controversy gained traction on Tuesday after the Assembly’s Chief Whip, Gbenga Oyekola, publicly distanced himself from any impeachment move, insisting he was neither consulted nor involved in such a plan.

Oyekola described the allegation as a deliberate attempt to create division within the Assembly and undermine its relationship with the executive arm of government. He reaffirmed his loyalty to the governor, stressing that he would not be part of any action capable of destabilising the state.

Similarly, the Speaker of the Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, denied claims that he was offered financial inducement to facilitate an impeachment process. He dismissed the allegation as politically motivated and aimed at tarnishing his image and destabilising both the legislature and the Makinde administration.

The situation has been further complicated by claims from political actors suggesting that lawmakers were approached with incentives, including promises of political positions and financial rewards, to support an impeachment agenda.

Adding another dimension to the unfolding drama, former Ekiti State governor, Ayodele Fayose, alleged that accusations of an impeachment plot were being used within broader political manoeuvres in the state.

Despite the swirling allegations, there is no official confirmation from the Assembly that any impeachment proceedings have been initiated against the governor.

Instead, multiple lawmakers have continued to deny involvement, portraying the claims as rumours aimed at sowing discord.

The Oyo State House of Assembly, a 32-member legislative body responsible for oversight of the executive, has in recent days become the focal point of political tension in the state, with observers warning that the situation could escalate if not carefully managed.

As of the time of filing this report, the Oyo State Government has not issued a formal statement on the impeachment rumours, while political watchers continue to monitor developments closely.
