President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Channels Television broadcaster Maupe Ogun-Yusuf as a member of the governing board of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The nomination is part of a list of 15 individuals forwarded to the Senate for confirmation as the President moves to reconstitute the commission’s board in line with statutory provisions.
The request, conveyed in a letter to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during plenary, seeks to strengthen the country’s human rights protection framework through a refreshed leadership structure at the commission.
Ogun-Yusuf, hails from Badagry local government area, Lagos is a prominent anchor on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, is among several media professionals included in the list, alongside other nominees drawn from legal, security and public service backgrounds.
Also nominated is Dr. Salamatu Hussaina Suleiman as chairman of the board, while Anthony Ojukwu is expected to continue as Executive Secretary, subject to Senate approval.
The Senate has since referred the President’s request to its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for screening, with a report expected within two weeks.
If confirmed, the new board is expected to play a critical role in promoting and protecting human rights, as well as strengthening oversight and accountability mechanisms across the country.
Ogun-Yusuf’s nomination has drawn attention within media and civil society circles, reflecting the growing inclusion of journalists in public institutions focused on governance and rights advocacy.
