Bakare breaks silence on poor outing at APC presidential primary

Outspoken preacher, Tunde Bakare has finally reacted to his poor outing at the recently concluded presidential primary of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Bakare, who is the Serving Overseer of Citadel Global Church, had failed to secure a single vote from the over 2,000 votes cast by the delegates.

During the primary, the clergyman had maintained that he wasn’t stepping down for anyone, referring to the decision of eight presidential hopefuls to withdraw from the race to back other contenders — seven for APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and one for Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, eventually clinched the APC ticket after polling 1,271 votes to beat his closest challenger, the immediate past Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi who had 316 votes.

Reacting to his failure despite claiming his presidential bid was divinely ordained, Bakare said his zero vote at the APC primary shows his resistance to “certain kinds of politics”.

“Despite the challenges leading up to the primaries, our heads remain unbowed because we did not compromise on the values that are integral to building a new Nigeria for us. The meaning has always been as important as this. This is why we confidently wear our zero votes as a badge of zero tolerance for certain kinds of politics,” he told his congregation on Sunday.

The fiery preacher, however, congratulated Tinubu on his victory and wish him well at the main polls.

He said, “I congratulate the winner of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for his victory. His emergence as a flagbearer and presidential candidate of the APC is a testament to his significant contributions to the cause of the south-west, as well as his labour towards the formation and establishment of the APC.

“As I have said in times past, I, therefore, extend best wishes to him as he proceeds on the campaign trail towards the 2023 general election.”
