Yusuf Buhari, son of late former President Muhammadu Buhari, has emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Sandamu/Daura/Mai’adua Federal Constituency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Buhari secured a landslide victory in the party’s primary election, polling 5,849 votes to defeat his closest rival, Auwal Lawal Daura, who garnered 21 votes.
With the result, Yusuf Buhari officially clinched the APC ticket to contest for the House of Representatives seat representing the constituency in Katsina State.
However, the outcome of the primary has sparked controversy, as Daura rejected the process and raised concerns over the credibility of the exercise.
Speaking after the election, Daura alleged that the primaries were not conducted in line with APC guidelines, questioning the legitimacy of the voting process and the eligibility of many participants.
“I am not satisfied with what happened today. Evidence is everywhere showing the injustice that was done. The manner of counting was highly dubious, and most of the people counted did not even have party membership cards,” he said.
Daura further explained that his decision to contest was based on demands from party members who preferred a democratic primary process instead of adopting a consensus candidate.
“When I started this political movement, I made it clear that it was about the will of the people. When a consensus candidate was said to have been adopted, the people said no, they wanted us to go for primaries. Therefore, my insistence was not a sign of disrespect, but rather a demonstration of our support for justice and fairness,” he added.
The APC primaries across several states have continued to generate mixed reactions as aspirants challenge outcomes and allege irregularities ahead of the 2027 elections.
