Why Boris Johnson is resigning as UK prime minister

After intense pressure, Boris Johnson will step down as UK prime minister on Thursday morning.

This development comes after over 50 government officials resigned from his administration following a slew of recent scandals.

A statement from Downing Street said: “The prime minister will make a statement to the country today.”

Report has it that the embattled prime minister met Sir Graham Brady, the chair of the Conservative backbench 1922 Committee, on Thursday morning, and agreed to step down from office.

On Tuesday, health minister Sajid Javid and his finance counterpart Rishi Sunak, who are considered as pillars of the Johnson administration, both resigned — a development that opened the floodgate of resignations by other ministers of various ranks and their aides.

Johnson had come under fire for breaching Covid-19 lockdown rules by attending a party. His woes increased when he appointed Christopher Pincher as Chief Whip despite being aware of the latter’s misconduct.

The embattled PM had defied calls by his cabinet to step down in the wake of ethics scandal, arguing that it would be wrong for him to “walk away” amid current economic pressures and the Ukraine war.

He, however, later bowed to pressure after more than 50 members of his government quitted and told him to go.

While the Conservative Party is expected to choose a new leader to replace him as prime minister, Johnson’s political future remains unclear.
