A United States-based Nigerian medical doctor, Uzoma Nwaubani, has died while participating in a free medical outreach in Abia State.

Dr. Nwaubani was part of a five-day medical mission organised by the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas in collaboration with the Abia State Government. The outreach, which ran from April 13 to April 17, provided free healthcare services to residents.

According to reports, the US-based physician developed a sudden medical emergency during the outreach and was rushed to a hospital, where efforts were made to save her life. However, she did not survive despite attempts by a team of local and international doctors.

Governor Alex Otti expressed shock over her death, describing her as a dedicated and compassionate professional who returned to Nigeria to serve her people.

Dr. Nwaubani was a board-certified urogynecologist and obstetrician-gynecologist based in the United States, with over two decades of medical experience. She was known for her work in women’s health and had travelled to Nigeria with her family, including her daughter, a final-year medical student, to take part in the humanitarian mission.

The governor extended condolences to her family and colleagues, noting that her sacrifice and commitment to providing free medical care would not be forgotten.

Despite the loss, organisers said the outreach continued, delivering essential healthcare services to communities in the state.
