President Bola Tinubu has thrown his weight behind Lagos State Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, as the preferred governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
The endorsement reportedly took place on Wednesday during a meeting which started by 2:30pm between the President and members of the party’s Governance Advisory Council (GAC) at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, according to TVC.
Hamzat was presented to Tinubu by the GAC leadership, led by its chairman, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, who described the move as a consensus decision reached by party elders.
The development builds on growing political support for Hamzat within Lagos, including backing from Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his adoption by all 34 members of the GAC.
Although the decision has sparked dissent among some aspirants, the council maintained that the process was inclusive and reflective of broad agreement within the party.
Speaking after the meeting, Olusi reiterated that the consensus was collectively reached, dismissing objections from aggrieved aspirants.
He added, however, that the APC would still conduct its primaries in line with party guidelines to uphold internal democracy and fairness.
