In a statement released by Musa Abdullahi Krishi, his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D., announced the withdrawal of the controversial Counter Subversion Bill and related draft legislation.
This decision follows extensive consultations with stakeholders and careful consideration of current national circumstances. Speaker Abbas Tajudeen emphasized his commitment to listening to citizens and fostering unity, affirming that he will not support any actions that could disrupt national peace and unity.
The Counter Subversion Bill, introduced on July 23, 2024, proposed severe penalties for various offenses, including failure to recite the national anthem, vandalism of national symbols or places of worship, and actions undermining the Federal Government.
It stipulated fines up to N5 million, 10-year prison terms, or both for offenders. Additionally, it outlined penalties for setting up illegal roadblocks, imposing unauthorized curfews, or forcefully occupying public or private spaces.
Reacting to the House of Representatives’ introduction of the Counter Subversion Bill,Aisha Yusufu an activist and a supporter of the Labour Party during the 2023 general election in a post on her X account on Wednesday has stated that , “Will choose 20 years in prison than sing Tinubu’s anthem passed by slaves masquerading as lawmakers in the National Assembly”
Recall in May, when the Nigerian National Anthem was changed, some Nigerians refused to sing it, as their way of protesting.
