President Bola Tinubu has approved a new salary structure for members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with junior soldiers receiving pay increases of up to 80 per cent as part of efforts to improve troop welfare.
The new salary package, which will take effect from September 1, was announced on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Under the revised structure, officers above the rank of Colonel will receive a 30 per cent salary increase, while personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will get a 50 per cent raise.
Soldiers from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will benefit from the highest increase of 80 per cent.
The approval is expected to increase the Armed Forces’ annual wage bill from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion.
The development comes days after the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), hinted that the Federal Government was finalising plans to review the salaries of military personnel.
According to Onanuga, the salary adjustment reflects the Tinubu administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of military personnel in recognition of their sacrifices in tackling insecurity across the country.
Tinubu praised members of the Armed Forces for their courage and dedication in the fight against terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges.
“The men and women who help to keep us safe in our homes must be supported and appreciated in the course of their duties to our nation,” the President said.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the military through improved welfare, modern weapons and advanced technology.
“Our administration will continue to prioritise troop welfare and modernise the armed forces by providing the weapons and technological tools needed to discharge their duties,” Tinubu stated.
The President stressed that security remains the foundation of national development, saying no country can achieve lasting progress without protecting the lives and property of its citizens.
He urged military personnel to view the salary increase as a demonstration of the nation’s appreciation for their service and sacrifice.
“I urge our servicemen to take our gesture as a sign of our deep appreciation of the services they render to our fatherland. Together we shall prevail over the enemies intent on destroying the fabric of our nation,” he added.
