Nigerian tennis player Oluwaseun Peter Ogunsakin has written his name into the country’s sporting history after becoming the first Nigerian to win a Grand Slam main draw match in 36 years.

The 18-year-old achieved the feat at the 2026 Wimbledon Junior Championships, ending a drought that had lasted since former Nigerian tennis star Nduka Odizor recorded a Grand Slam main draw victory at the 1990 Australian Open.

Ogunsakin’s historic campaign at Wimbledon was marked by resilience and determination. Although he suffered a first-round defeat in the boys’ singles event, he bounced back in the doubles competition alongside Botswana’s Ntungamili Raguin.

The African pair produced one of the biggest upsets of the tournament by defeating the third-seeded team in the opening round before continuing their impressive run to the semi-finals.

Before making history in the doubles event, Ogunsakin had already broken another long-standing record by qualifying for the Wimbledon boys’ singles main draw.

He secured his place with victories over British wildcard Archie Gray and highly rated Canadian junior Benjamin Azar.

His qualification made him the first Nigerian to feature in the Wimbledon singles main draw in 36 years, showing his rapid rise in international junior tennis.

The doubles victory carried even greater significance, as it ended Nigeria’s decades-long wait for a Grand Slam main draw win at any level.

The country’s previous triumph had come when Nduka Odizor won his first-round match at the 1990 Australian Open, a record that had remained untouched for more than three decades.

Although Ogunsakin and Raguin’s remarkable Wimbledon journey eventually ended in the semi-finals, the Nigerian teenager’s performance has been widely celebrated as a major milestone for the country’s tennis development.

His breakthrough at one of the sport’s biggest tournaments is expected to inspire a new generation of Nigerian players and has renewed optimism about the future of tennis in the country.

With his history-making Wimbledon campaign, Ogunsakin has established himself as one of Nigeria’s brightest tennis prospects and a player to watch on the global stage.
