Registration of APC members, laudable, but wrong timing – Hon. Faleke

Member representing the Ikeja Federal Constituency, House Committee on Finance, Honorable James Abiodun Faleke, Monday, admonished that the registration of the All Progressives Party members should be placed on hold following the resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic.

Honorable Faleke made the call in an open letter addressed to the chairman of the care taker committee of the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Mai Bala Bunu.

The Hon. noted that conducting a registration exercise for its members with the prevailing pandemic situation in the country could earn the party a negative moral rating.

Hon. Faleke who once tested positive for coronavirus, said the idea of revalidating the membership the party members is laudable but should be halted.

“I am obliged to write this letter to express my concern over an issue that can earn us negative moral ratings as a political party and as Nigerians in general.

“The prevailing pandemic situation in Nigeria and the fact of being a COVID-19 survivor compelled me to write this letter to you as a loyal and committed party member.

“I want to state categorically that the contents of this letter are my personal opinions based on personal experience, interactions with people and observation of events happening around us.

“Some states are already over stretched in oxygen supplies and care, our government has for some time given directives to the religious bodies to reduce congressional attendance at both churches and mosques. So many states have cancelled social gatherings. While others are compelling the use of face masks and other preventive measures. So why must we go into an exercise that will certainly draw large crowds across the various state?

“If our members come out to register in high numbers, then the possibility of increase in the number of COVID-19 cases might increase, ultimately leading to an increase in fatalities.

“We are the ruling party and we must be in the forefront of promoting the welfare of our people, pushing this exercise forward will rather be the contrary.

“My humble opinion and suggestion is we should postpone this exercise to a time that is conducive, when the coronavirus situation in the country would have improved.” the letter read in part.
