Rare earthquake strikes in Australia, damages buildings

A rare earthquake of magnitude 5.9 struck near Melbourne in southern Australia, shaking buildings, knocking down walls of Melbourne and sending its resident running into the streets, on Wednesday.

According to the AFP, most of the Melbourne residents were at home when the quake struck since Melbourne has began its eighth week of pandemic lockdown, bracing for a third straight day of violent anti-vaccine protest.

Reuters reported that images and video footage circulating on social media showed rubble blocking one of Melbourne’s main streets, while people in northern parts of the city said on social media they had lost power and others said they were evacuated from buildings.

The earthquake hits east of the country’s second largest city just after 9:00AM, local time ( 2300 GMT) and was felt hundreds of miles away.

Geoscience Australia reported that this quake was followed by four smaller ones ranging from magnitude 2.5 to 4.1.
