Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set for the 2023 presidential election after it finally choose a running mate for its presidential flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar.
BlackBox Nigeria gathered that the governor of Delta State, Ifeanyi Okowa has been picked as the PDP vice presidential candidate.
This decision comes after the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) reportedly endorsed the governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike as Atiku’s running mate. 13 members voted in favour of Wike, while 3 supported Okowa, according to some reports.
However, Atiku was said to have kicked against Wike taking the VP slot, citing the temperament of the Rivers State governor who also contested for the PDP presidential ticket.
The former Vice President, instead, expressed interest in Okowa, insisting that he intends to run a campaign based strictly on issues.
The Delta State governor arrived the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, on Thursday morning, to appear for screening for the VP slot.
Atiku later confirmed Okowa as his running mate via his official Twitter page.
“I am delighted to announce Governor @IAOkowa as my Vice Presidential candidate. I look forward to travelling our great country together, engaging with all Nigerians and building a shared future of peace, unity, and prosperity for all. As One We Can Get It Done. #OneNigeria. -AA,” the tweet reads.
