Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has reported an attack and subsequent kidnap by suspected political thugs at a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
Sowore disclosed the incident in a brief statement posted on his official Facebook page on Friday.
“Thugs just attacked us inside a restaurant in Ado Ekiti,” he wrote.
The AAC subsequently raised the alarm over the incident, alleging that Sowore and members of his campaign team were attacked at about 1pm.
The party also claimed that Sowore was taken away during the attack, raising concerns about his whereabouts.
Corroborating the claim, another post reads, “Armed Thugs Kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown”.
According to reports, the incident occurred at Tawakalitu Restaurants and Catering Services, where the attackers allegedly stormed the premises and vandalised the facility.
DAILY POST reported that efforts to confirm the incident from the Ekiti State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing its report.
The attack comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections, with political parties and candidates beginning campaigns and mobilisation activities across the country.
Sowore, a human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, recently returned to Nigeria to begin his campaign ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
He had travelled to Ekiti for campaign activities, according to his lawyer, who informed the Federal High Court in Abuja of his absence during proceedings in his cyberbullying case on Thursday.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no independent confirmation from the police regarding the alleged abduction or Sowore’s whereabouts.
