On moral degeneration among youths and social media

Elsie Udoh

“If wealth is lost, nothing is lost.
If health is lost, something is lost.
If character is lost, everything is lost
Best of all thing is character!”

The social media generation, or should I say the Gen Z generation as they parade themselves to be, is mired in moral decadence. In the not too far past, morals and discipline were well respected; we read more than we watched.

Social media, with just a click, provides you with information which you seek (and do not seek). This ought to be a technology victory. But why is it a mocking weakness instead? We see what we ought not to; children are exposed to the harsh dangers of life from the comfort of their homes via their mobile phones. It is a shame to see most youths seek the easy way to make money because social media have portrayed that hard work brings delayed success, hence take the easy way, rob people of their money, flaunt your body parts and use it to make cash, and experiment with sex.

Lazy youths! Lazy youths everywhere! The clock is ticking the new phase of generations – generation alpha and beta is fast intertwining with us, a dire need for retribution is needed, and a sane environment to nurture productive youths is earnestly sought. It starts with you and me.

Stop the clicks, go back to the shelf and read books – self-development books, invest time in personal development. Parents should inculcate in their children the right morals from infancy, empower them with productive skills, and be intentional in training and disciplining a child. The need for censoring what is being transmitted in the airwaves should be enforced. Our schools should double their roles in giving and making closed-door monitoring of what their wards are exposed to. Youths should be taught the right path to positive living. The most profitable investment a society can possess is a crop of discipline and God-fearing future leaders.

It is very much required to make and implement some constructive approaches for the youths on which the country’s present and future depends, otherwise it will be too difficult to create a positive and harmonic atmosphere of morality and humanity.
