The Nigerian table tennis team has suffered a triple setback at the Paris 2024 Olympics, with Offiong Edem becoming the third player to exit the competition.

Edem’s loss came on Sunday, July 28, after a 4-0 defeat to Brazil’s Bruna Takahashi in the women’s singles Round of 64.

Edem’s exit follows those of Quadri Aruna and Olajide Omotayo, who were both eliminated on Saturday.

While Aruna and Omotayo managed to win at least one set in their matches, Edem was unable to secure a single set against Takahashi, losing 11-8, 11-4, 13-11, 12-10.

Omotayo had earlier lost to Iran’s Noshad Alamiyan 4-1, despite winning the first set.

The triple blow leaves Nigeria without a representative in the table tennis event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The losses mark a disappointing outing for the Nigerian team, which had hoped to make a bigger impact at the Games.
