Nigerian Senate passes student loan bill into law

The National Assembly have passed the student loan, ‘Access to Higher Education’
Act ‘Repeal and Re-enactment’ Bill, 2024.

The bill scaled through first, second and third reading in both houses of the National Assembly.

The student Loan Access to Higher Education,Repeal and Re-enactment Bill 2024 seeks to enhance the implementation of the Higher Education Student Loan Scheme by addressing challenges related to the management structure of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELF).

It also seeks to amend applicant eligibility requirements,loan purpose, funding sources and disbursement and repayment procedures.

On March 14, President Bola Tinubu asked the national Assembly to Repeal and Re-enact the student loan after the suspension of its launching.

The lower chamber followed it’s consideration on the report of the senate committee on tertiary institutions followed by the report of chair of the committee, Muntari Dandutse during plenary on Wednesday.

A conference committee of the senate and house of representatives would be set up to harmonies the bill, after which it will be sent to the president for assent.
