Team Nigeria ended the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as Africa’s highest-ranked nation, securing an impressive seventh-place finish on the overall medals table after a strong campaign across multiple sporting events.
Nigeria concluded the Games with a total of 24 medals: 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze making it the only African country to finish inside the top 10 of the final standings.
Australia topped the medals table with 70 gold medals, followed by England and Canada, while India finished fourth.
Team Nigeria’s success was driven by outstanding performances in athletics, weightlifting, para powerlifting and boxing, with the country’s athletes delivering several podium finishes to maintain their dominance among African nations throughout the competition.
The strong showing also reinforced Nigeria’s status as one of the Commonwealth Games’ most successful nations.
The Glasgow campaign further improved the country’s historical record at the Games, where it remains among the top 10 most decorated nations of all time.
Reacting to the performance, former Nigerian long jumper and sports administrator Yusuf Alli praised Team Nigeria’s achievement, describing the seventh-place finish as a testament to the resilience and quality of the country’s athletes despite the reduced number of sports at the Glasgow Games.
The Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, which ran from July 23 to August 2, featured athletes from 74 Commonwealth Games Associations competing across 10 sports.
The event concluded with a colourful closing ceremony that officially handed over hosting duties to Ahmedabad, India, for the 2030 edition.
