Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has etched his name into the club’s history books after becoming the youngest player ever to feature for the Red Devils’ senior team.
The 15-year-old forward made his unofficial first-team debut on Saturday after coming on as a late substitute in Manchester United’s 2-1 pre-season victory over Atletico Madrid in Stockholm.
At just 15 years and 299 days old, Gabriel surpassed a record that had stood for nearly seven decades, underlining his status as one of English football’s brightest young talents.
Gabriel, who has earned the nickname “Kid Messi” because of his exceptional dribbling skills and creativity, replaced summer signing Bryan Mbeumo in the closing stages of the match, receiving a warm reception from supporters eager to witness the teenager’s first appearance for the senior side.
His promotion follows an outstanding campaign with Manchester United’s academy. The teenage sensation scored 23 goals in 23 appearances for the club’s Under-18 side last season, winning the Under-18 Premier League Player of the Season award and playing a key role in the team’s run to the FA Youth Cup final.
Despite the excitement surrounding his emergence, former players and pundits have urged caution over Gabriel’s development.
They argue that while his talent is undeniable, Manchester United should carefully manage his progress to avoid placing excessive expectations on the youngster at such an early stage of his career.
Manager Michael Carrick has gradually integrated Gabriel into first-team activities during pre-season, with the teenager now viewed as one of the club’s most exciting academy prospects.
Although his appearance came in a friendly rather than a competitive fixture, it is widely regarded as another significant milestone in his rapid rise through the ranks.
Gabriel is expected to continue training with the senior squad as Manchester United prepare for the new campaign, with fans hopeful the gifted forward will soon make his competitive debut and further cement his place among the club’s next generation of stars.
