The Super Eagles of Nigeria soared triumphantly over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, having a hard-fought victory of 4-2 on penalties in the semi-final clash of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Wednesday.
The clash of the two heavyweight teams ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw, which were secured through penalty shootouts from both sides, by Nigeria’s Ekong and South Africa’s Mokoena.
As the clock ticked into extra time, both teams displayed determination, creating opportunities and thrilling the spectators with their skillful play.
However, despite the scorching heat and intense pressure, neither side could find the breakthrough, leading to a tense penalty shootout to determine the victor.
The shootout commenced with Terem Moffi scoring Nigeria’s first penalty.
Omeruo extended Nigeria’s lead with a confident strike before Nwabali emerged as the hero, brilliantly saving South Africa’s third penalty to maintain Nigeria’s advantage.
The drama unfolded as Aina faltered with Nigeria’s fourth penalty, giving South Africa a glimmer of hope.
However, their dreams were dashed when Mokoena’s subsequent miss handed Nigeria a decisive advantage.
With nerves of steel, Iheanacho sealed Nigeria’s triumph with a clinical finish, propelling them into the final amidst scenes of jubilation.
