Lagos-Based Lawyer Drags LASIEC To Court Over ‘Administrative Fee’, Others

A Lagos-based lawyer, Yakubu Eleto has dragged the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission to a Federal High Court in Lagos as he seeks for an order to postpone the upcoming Local Government elections.

The lawyer, who is a graduate of Lagos State University is seeking the interpretation of the Commission regarding its powers to conduct local council election as well as collect administrative fee from all aspirants and setting other requirements.

Recall that LASIEC had announced that all aspirants must pay administrative fee; Chairmanship N100,000, Vice-Chairmanship N75,000 and Councillorship N50,000. Apart from the fee expected to pay by all the aspirants, they were also asked to present their respective Lagos State Residents Registration Agency card and evidence of three years tax clearance of the State.

Eleto stated that all the request by the Commission will disenfranchise citizens and is in contravention of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights and the Universal Declaration of Human and People’s Rights. He is seeking the Court to declare the requests of the Commission as unconstitutional, so as to allow poor aspirants participate in the exercise.

Joined in the suit as defendants is the Attorney-General of Lagos State.

Eleto is also seeking an order of perpetual injunction restraining LASIEC from disqualifying candidates who failed to meet the conditions and an order for the extension of time for the election process to enable poor political parties obtain forms for their respective candidates.
