Former Kano State governor and National Democratic Congress (NDC) leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has dismissed claims that he is secretly supporting President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Kwankwaso described the allegation as baseless, saying those spreading such rumours lack understanding of politics.

Speaking during an interview with Global TV, the former presidential candidate said his political movement remains committed to the NDC and its vision for Nigeria.

“Only fools will believe that we are working for Tinubu. My supporters and I are working for the NDC and for what we believe will benefit Nigerians,” he said.

Kwankwaso noted that although he has maintained a long relationship with Tinubu over the years, it does not mean they belong to the same political camp.

According to him, political friendship should not be mistaken for political alliance.

The former governor also criticised some aides of the president, accusing them of failing to properly brief Tinubu on the country’s realities.

He alleged that instead of concentrating on Nigeria’s economic and security challenges, some presidential associates are focused on persuading opposition politicians and governors to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Kwankwaso further addressed his alliance with former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, saying the coalition emerged after extensive consultations among stakeholders.

He explained that members of the coalition considered Obi the most suitable southern candidate to work with ahead of the next general election.

The NDC leader added that the coalition still has sufficient time before 2027 to engage Nigerians and counter rumours surrounding its activities.

He said the alliance is aimed at offering Nigerians an alternative platform focused on competent leadership and national development.
