Residents of Orimedu I Ward C in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area have elected a new councillor to replace their late representative following a by-election organized by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC).
The by-election was conducted to fill the vacancy left by the death of the ward’s former councillor, Oluwakemi Rufai, who died shortly after being sworn in.
According to results announced by LASIEC, Rufai Kafayat Abosede of the All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged victorious with 8,386 votes.
Her opponent, Samsideen Adeleke of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), polled 27 votes.
LASIEC explained that the exercise was part of efforts to ensure that communities affected by the loss of elected representatives continue to enjoy adequate representation at the grassroots level.
The commission praised voters, election personnel and security agencies for their cooperation during the poll and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting free, fair and credible elections.
With the victory, Abosede takes over the seat previously occupied by the late councillor and will represent Orimedu I Ward C in the local legislative council.
