How Zamfara deputy governor got impeached over refusal to defect to APC

The embattled deputy governor of Zamfara State, Mahdi Aliyu Gusau has finally been relieved of his position.

The State House of Assembly at its plenary, on Wednesday, impeached Gusau as deputy governor, after the report of the seven-member committee set up by Kulu Aliyu, chief judge of the state, to investigate the allegations against him, was read by the Speaker.

Having found the embattled deputy governor guilt of the allegations, 20 out of 22 members of the house voted in favour of his impeachment.

Confirming the development in a statement, the spokesperson of the house, Mustafa Jafaru Kaura noted that decision was in line with the provisions of the Nigerian constitution.

“Having secured the required number of the votes as directed by the constitution, Speaker Magarya announced the impeachment of Barr Mahdi Aliyu Muhammad Gusau as the substantive Deputy Governor of the state,” Kaura said.

The governor, Bello Matawalle immediately appointed the senator representing Zamfara Central Senatorial District, Senator Hassan Mohammed Nasiha Gusau as the new deputy governor.

This comes weeks after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) warned Zamfara State governor, Bello Matawalle, and the state assembly against impeaching Gusau.

The former deputy governor’s travails began last year when he refused to leave the PDP and follow his principal who defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His action was considered disloyal to the governor, and ever since, talks of his impeachment became more pronounced.

Before Gusau’s eventual removal on Wednesday, the chairman of the house standing committee on information, Shamsudeen Basko had vowed that nothing — not even a court order — could stop the house from impeaching the embattled deputy governor.
