History-making Nigerian athlete emerges 100m hurdles champion

Tobi Amusan has etched her name into the history books after she became the first Nigerian athlete to win gold at the World Athletics Championships

The world record holder won the women’s 100m hurdles gold in a rather dramatic fashion in Oregon, on Sunday.

Amusan had earlier made history after finishing in a world record time of 12.12secs in the semi-finals, smashing the previous best mark of 12.20secs held by Keni Harrison of the United States in 2016.

In the finals, the Nigerian went faster and ran 12.06secs but her feat will not be recognised as a world record owing to the over 2m/s wind speed.

While Amusan earned Nigeria her first gold in the history of the World Athletics Championships, Jamaica’s Britany Anderson took silver in 12.23secs, while Olympic champion Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico claimed bronze in 12.23secs.

The current Commonwealth Champion also walked away with a cheque of $100,000 for her win.
