The Federal Government has applied to withdraw the case of “illegal possession of firearms” it had previously filed against the suspended Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

The application was presented during a session at the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) at the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar, informed Justice Nicholas Oweibo that the decision was a result of further investigations.

Mohammed Bakodo Abubakar presented the application orally, prompting a response from the defense counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN).

Daudu contested the government’s application, asserting that due to its disregard for the court’s order granting Emefiele bail, the application should not be considered.

Blackboxnigeria reported that Judge Nicholas Oweibo granted Emefiele bail on July 25 with N20 million bonds, based on a two-count charge related to the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The judge directed Emefiele’s remand at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre until the bail conditions were met.

However, the Directorate of State Services (DSS) controversially rearrested Emefiele, reportedly clashing with Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) officials on the court premises.
