Edo Assembly Impeaches Speaker, Agbebaku

The Edo State House of Assembly has impeached its Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, during plenary on Monday, August 17, 2026.

Agbebaku was removed from office during a sitting of the House, although details surrounding the circumstances of his impeachment remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

Following his removal, the lawmakers reportedly appointed the Deputy Speaker, Osawmonyi Atu, as the new Speaker.

Atu represents Orhionmwon I Constituency in the Assembly.

Agbebaku, who represents Owan West Constituency, was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He defeated the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the January 2025 election to emerge as a member of the Edo State House of Assembly.
