Capitol Hill Invasion: Pence Condemns Violence

– As Congress Leaders Proceed With Biden Certification

In reaction to Wednesday’s invasion of the US Capitol by Pro-Trump protesters, the US Vice President has condemned the development.

The November 3 election, which was to be certified by a joint session of Congress before the invasion, was won by Joe Biden of the Democratic Party.

Speaking before the invasion, Pence, whom Trump had expected to challenge the election results of some states, said he lacks the constitutional powers to do so.

“The Constitution constrains me from claiming unilateral authority to determine which electoral votes should be counted and which should not,” he said at the joint session.

Shortly after his speech, a mob of Trump supporters invaded the Capitol and disrupted the session.

He tweeted, “We condemn the violence that took place here in the strongest possible terms. We grieve the loss of life in these hallowed halls, as well as the injuries suffered by those who defended our Capitol today.”

Meanwhile, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has said leaders of Congress will proceed with the certification of President-elect Joe Biden’s win.

Pelosi announced, in a letter to colleagues, that the leaders will resume the joint session on Wednesday night to certify Biden’s win once the Capitol is “cleared for use.”

According to CNN, the US House speaker said: “In consultation with Leader Hoyer and Whip Clyburn and after calls to the Pentagon, the Justice Department and the Vice President, we have decided we should proceed tonight at the Capitol once it is cleared for use. Leader Hoyer will be sending out more guidance later today.”
