One would recall that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Tuesday, August 14, 2018, directed the then IGP, Ibrahim Idris, to immediately overhaul the management and activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Osinbajo said that based on the persistent complaints and reports on the activities of SARS that border on allegations of human rights violations, there should be overhaul of the management and activities of SARS to ensure that any unit that would emerge from the process should be intelligence-driven.

Following Osinbajo’s order, the former inspector general of police, Idris, followed suit with a new arrangement to address complaints and allegations on human rights violations against some of the personnel of the special operatives.

According to a statement released in the evening of Tuesday, August 14, by Ag. DCP Jimoh Moshood, the then public relations officer of the force, the former police chief renamed the operatives as Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS). Idris, as part of the new arrangements, also appointed a new commissioner of police as the overall head of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad nationwide.
