A former Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Toyin Gafaar Bolowotan, has formally declared his intention to contest for the Ikorodu Constituency I seat in the Lagos State House of Assembly, positioning himself as a grassroots mobiliser with a track record in youth development and infrastructure.

Bolowotan’s declaration comes amid growing political activities ahead of the next electoral cycle in Lagos State, with the aspirant pledging to translate his experience in public service and community engagement into legislative impact.

Speaking on his ambition, Bolowotan pointed to his tenure at the Lagos State Sports Commission as evidence of his capacity to deliver results, particularly highlighting initiatives that directly benefited Ikorodu Division.

On infrastructure, he noted that he oversaw the construction of multiple stadia across the state, including the long-abandoned Igbogbo Stadium, which is now nearing completion after years of neglect. The project is widely seen as a significant boost to sports development in Ikorodu.

He also referenced a major recruitment drive under his leadership, which ended nearly a decade-long employment freeze at the commission.

According to him, the exercise brought in dozens of young graduates many from Ikorodu on Grade Level 8, helping to restore administrative structure and create employment opportunities.

Bolowotan further introduced the Sports Summer Camp initiative, designed to engage school-age children during long holidays with a mix of sporting and life skills training. Ikorodu served as one of the key centres for the programme, which was organised in partnership with professionals in various fields.

In a bid to modernise sports in Lagos, he championed the introduction of emerging and non-traditional sports such as esports, cheerleading, and the revival of netball, aligning the state’s sporting ecosystem with global trends.

One of the landmark achievements of his tenure, he said, was facilitating the return of the Super Eagles to Lagos after two decades. This involved the refurbishment of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, which subsequently hosted World Cup qualifying matches.

Bolowotan also highlighted his support for athletes and sports journalists, including Lagos State’s backing of Olympic hopefuls such as Ikorodu indigenes Seye Ogunlewe Jr. and Ahmed Koleosho.

He further fulfilled a campaign promise by facilitating the donation of a Hiace bus to the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria.

Beyond public office, Bolowotan’s involvement in grassroots sports development dates back nearly two decades.

He founded Bolowotan Football Club in 2007, which later evolved into Ikorodu City Football Club, now regarded as one of Nigeria’s prominent football club.

He also organises the annual Bolowotan Gold Cup, popularly known as the “Ikorodu World Cup,” now in its 17th edition, alongside other initiatives such as the Renewed Hope Table Tennis Championship, the Toyin Gafaar Indoor Games for LASUSTECH students, and the Olowooribi U-17 Cup.

Narrating the inspiration behind his journey, Bolowotan recalled that his foray into youth engagement through sports was sparked by a personal experience with crime. After being robbed, he said he identified the perpetrators and chose to rehabilitate them by engaging them in football, an effort that led to the formation of his first club.

Political observers say his campaign is likely to centre on youth empowerment, community development, and leveraging sports as a tool for social change.

“The candidacy is not about rhetoric but about performance,” a statement from his camp said, adding that Bolowotan remains committed to advancing the interests of Ikorodu residents if elected.
