ASUU: Striking Lecturers Set To Resume Back To Work, As FG Offers N70bn

After 8 months of strike, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has agreed, on Friday, to resume back to work following the agreement of the federal government to pay N70bn to the striking lecturers.

The strike which started in March had crippled academic activities in public universities across the country.

The consensus was reached by the union leadership during a meeting, in Abuja, with the representatives of the government led by the Minister of Labour and Employment,  Dr Chris Ngige.

According to The Punch, the government pledged to pay N40 billion as the Earned Allowance and N30bn for the revitalisation of the university system bringing the total payment to N70 billion.

Also, the union would be exempted from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, as part of its key demands.

The union leadership is expected to report the agreement to its organs and then inform the federal government of their decision, followed by an announcement of a date for the calling off of the strike.
