The Anambra State Government has released documents it says provide evidence of financial obligations inherited from the administration of former governor Peter Obi.

The state Commissioner for Information and Value Reorientation, Law Mefor, presented the documents while responding to recent claims by Obi over the state’s finances.

According to the government, records from the Debt Management Office showed that Anambra had outstanding external loans of $92.35 million, which it valued at about ₦127.37 billion as of June 30, 2026.

The government also disputed Obi’s claim that he left more than ₦2.13 billion in an ecological fund account when he left office in 2014.

Mefor said a certified statement from the First Bank account referenced by Obi showed that the account was an Internally Generated Revenue Consolidated Revenue Account and did not contain the amount claimed by the former governor.

Obi had earlier rejected allegations that his administration left the state with unpaid debts and other financial obligations.

The former governor said his administration cleared more than ₦35 billion in historical gratuities and arrears and left no unpaid salaries, pensions or certified contractor obligations.

He also maintained that funds meant for an erosion-control project were preserved and challenged the state government to provide evidence to contradict his claims.

The latest exchange has renewed the dispute over the financial records inherited by successive administrations in Anambra, with both sides relying on official documents and opposing interpretations of the state’s finances.
